Lenzing’s Natural Well-being series brings a fresh wave of innovative upgrades

In its quest to propel the textile value chain towards a circular economy, Lenzing is launching the second phase of its Natural Well-being offerings. This latest development goes beyond fiber blends, covering every stage of the production process, to create textiles that are not only high-quality and comfortable but also strive to be kinder to the planet.

The first phase demonstrated the versatile potential and exceptional performance of TENCEL™ branded lyocell and modal fibers when blended with other materials like merino wool, hemp, and cotton, conducive to upswinging the eco-friendly [1] content of various products. These TENCEL™ branded fibers are known for their inherent softness, breathability, moisture management, and hypoallergenic properties. The resulting blends enhance fabric texture for next-to-skin applications and enable design possibilities while also minimizing environmental impact [2]. The outcome brought to life a diverse collection of non-synthetic fiber blends used in various fabric types, including single jerseys, interlocks, fleeces, and woven fabrics.

Building on this successful foundation, the next phase of Natural Well-being expands the philosophy beyond the fiber level. It will incorporate textile processes, dyes, and chemicals that are less harmful to the environment, alongside Lenzing’s signature natural fiber blends made with TENCEL™ Lyocell and Modal fibers [3]. These production methods include organic farming and low-impact dyeing techniques, such as space dyeing and waterless [4] or reduced water processing, all of which contribute to reduced resource consumption. Additionally, alternative materials that are considered kinder to the environment, such as natural softeners [5], biodegradable surfactants [6] and water-based adhesives [7], are utilized.

By combining the EU Ecolabel certified [8] TENCEL™ Lyocell and Modal fibers with the abovementioned processes, dyes, and chemicals, Lenzing further enhances the environmental profile and performance of its products while striving to reduce the ecological footprint associated with textile manufacturing. For instance, low-impact dyeing techniques emphasize resource efficiency, while natural softeners contribute to a comfortable hand feel. The initiative will bring out a wider range of products, from T-shirts and shirts to sweaters and dresses.

“As consumer demand for sustainable fashion grows, the industry is shifting away from conventional, resource-intensive practices to mitigate environmental impacts,” said Andreas Gürtler, Senior Manager Global Business Development Active Sportswear at Lenzing. “Our Natural Well-being series exemplifies this shift towards apparel with a lower environmental impact, advocating for mill and brand partners who acknowledge and embrace organic and low-impact production that helps reduce the consumption of resources, protecting the ecosystem. Additionally, adopting these processes, which bring less damages to the ecosystems, minimizes the potential hazards associated with heavy metals or synthetic residues for anyone who comes into contact with the materials, including workers and end-users. We are working closely with our mill partners to develop samples that will bring this new phase of Natural Well-being to life.”

This series embodies Lenzing’s commitment to transforming every aspect of the value chain for the better. Mill and brand partners can opt for natural, high-performing fiber blends combined with eco-friendly processes and materials. Workers are protected by safer materials. Consumers can enjoy more planet-friendly products without compromising quality or style. Lenzing invites value chain stakeholders to join hands in this new chapter and contribute to far-reaching positive impacts.

[1] LENZING™ Lyocell and Modal standard fibers are certified by TÜV AUSTRIA as biodegradable in soil, freshwater and marine environments, and compostable under home and industrial conditions.

[2] TENCEL™ Lyocell and Modal fibers are made with at least 50% less carbon emissions and water consumption, compared to generic (unbranded) lyocell and modal. The results were calculated according to LCA standards (ISO 14040/44) and are made available via the Higg Materials Sustainability Index (MSI) by the Sustainable Apparel Coalition (Version 3.7).

[3] TENCEL™ Lyocell and Modal fibers are made from wood, a natural and renewable raw material carefully sourced from responsibly managed forests. The wood taken from nature is purposefully balanced with forest growth rates, to ensure the continued availability of this valuable resource.
